ROALD DAHL'S MATILDA THE MUSICAL

Gas Lamp Players is thrilled to announce Matilda the Musical as the 2019 Junior Mainstage!  Matilda Junior Mainstage will be the full length production and NOT a junior version of the Broadway show.  In light of the demands of the full show production, auditions/casting/enrollment is taking place before the end of the school year to allow for full rehearsals to begin after Labor Day.  Please read through the following information prior to the Meet & Greet on June 5th.  Questions can be emailed to gljuniorshow@gmail.com or posed during the parent portion of the Meet & Greet on June 5th.

REQUIRED MEET & GREET

Matilda auditions will only be available to the performers who attend the Meet & Greet on June 5th.

Interested performers in grades 4th through 8th for the 2019-2020 school year (current 3rd to 7th graders) will work with the show's directors to learn a song, short dance and theater game.  The performers will also learn about the audition process and rehearsal requirements.  Meet & Greet attendance is REQUIRED for auditions/enrollment.

The Meet & Greet will be held on Wednesday, June 5th from 4pm-5pm at Glen Ridge High School.  Parents are encouraged but not required to stay during the Meet & Greet to learn more about this unique opportunity and hear from the show's producers about the audition/enrollment timing and process.

AUDITION PROCESS

Due to the overwhelming interest in Matilda with Meet & Greet registrations far exceeding our enrollment capacity, we will be holding auditions prior to the mainstage registration.  Matilda has presented a unique opportunity as our first full length junior mainstage.  For this junior mainstage ONLY, we will open sign-ups for audition time slots after the Meet & Greet.  Note demonstrating dedication and enthusiasm will be considered as strongly as talent.

Auditions are an exciting and difficult time for everyone involved in a production.  In order for children to benefit from this kind of experience, it is important for parents to help their children understand what is involved.  We anticipate over 100 auditions for Matilda! Some have lots of experience; others are auditioning for the first time.

The most important thing to do at this audition… is have fun!  Hopefully, parents will encourage their children to see this as a learning experience – getting a part is just an added bonus!

Please see below for some answers to our most popular questions:

WHEN ARE AUDITIONS?

Auditions will be held on June 10th and June 11th at the Glen Ridge High School (200 Ridgewood Avenue , Glen Ridge).  You will select from the following two options:

1. Group Audition for performers interested in participating in the Friday only rehearsals - these performers will be featured in 2 ensemble numbers during the show.

2. Individual Audition for performers who are prioritizing Matilda over other fall committments and are available on both Wednesdays and Fridays (3:30pm-5:30pm) and Mondays as needed (6:30pm-8:30pm).

WHEN ARE THE CALLBACKS?

Callbacks, if needed, will be held on June 12th.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR MY AUDITION?

We have posted the lyrics, music links and sides selections from this production.  Everyone attending an individual audition must pick ONE character for their audition (Matilda, Miss Honey, Mr. Wormwood, Mrs. Wormwood, Bruce, Michael, Lavender, Mrs. Phelps, Amanda, Nigel, Eric, Alice, Hortensia, Tommy).

The one character that looms larger than life in Matilda and is the manifestation of children's nightmares is Mrs. Trunchbull.  Because of this, the directors have decided to pull from the Gas Lamp family of adult actors for this pivotal role.  Not unlike Santa in Elf Jr.

Your audition should be memorized. REMEMBER:  just because you audition for one role does NOT mean you will be cast in that role.  You will also learn a dance combination at the audition, so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.  Please rehearse your piece and remember to “sell” the song!  “Acting the song” is probably more important than anything!

Please check both the Lyrics/Music and Character Sides for your audition.  For example, Lavender's sides can be found in "Character Sides" and Lavender's vocal audition (When I Grow Up) in "Lyrics and Music".

Group audition attendees DO NOT need to prepare any material in advance of their audition.  Wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for a short dance routine.

WHAT IS THE COST INVOLVED WITH JUNIOR MAINSTAGE?

Performers who accept a spot in the Friday only rehearsal ensemble will be required to pay a tuition amount of $445 to cover the costs of rehearsals from September to November, costumes, accessories, etc.  Performers who accept a spot in the Wednesday/Friday rehearsal ensemble will be required to pay a tuition amount of $595.  Performers who are offered a lead role with rehearsals on Wednesday/Friday and some Mondays will be required to pay a tuition amount of $645.

As a non-profit organization these funds help us cover extensive production costs including rights/royalties, lighting, sound, staff, location rental costs, costumes, set, etc.

The Missy Centanni Scholarship Fund was created in 2014 to honor Missy Centanni, a woman who embodied our Mission Statement and did everything in her power to help the Gas Lamp family thrive and be a haven for kids, parents, anyone in our community wanting to play a role. Contributions made to the fund allow students who might not otherwise be able to participate and enhance our program, join and become members of this wonderful family.

If the tuition costs will limit your child's ability to participate in the junior mainstage, please apply for a scholarship by submitting this Financial Aid Request Form.

WILL I DEFINITELY GET A PART IN THE PRODUCTION?

Not everyone that auditions is guaranteed a role in the production.  Unfortunately, the overwhelming interest in Matilda far exceeds our enrollment capacity. That is why the audition is so important.  It is your chance to shine and show us what you’ve got!  Gas Lamp Players intends to double cast the lead roles in the production. Remember in whatever role you may receive:  THERE ARE NO SMALL PARTS…ONLY SMALL ACTORS!

MY CHILD DID NOT GET THE PART OF (desired role)…WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Every director has a vision for each role. There are lots of different directors, all of whom have different visions.  None of these visions are “right” or “wrong” – they are just interpretations of how a particular person views a particular role.  Just because the creative team didn’t feel your child was right for a role in this production, doesn’t mean that he/she won’t be right for that same role in another production.  It just means that your child wasn’t what we were looking for this time around.  Note that we will equally consider the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated as strongly as talent.

MY CHILD WAS NOT CAST IN THIS PRODUCTION.  IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO GET INVOLVED?

Yes!  We have classes and workshops for kids in grades 1st through 12th. Our youth programs do not typically require an audition.  Please inquire about these other performing opportunities.

IF I AM CAST WHEN ARE THE REHEARSALS & PRODUCTION?

Matilda will rehearse Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays beginning September 4th.  Rehearsals are from 3:30pm-5:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Lead character roles will also be called on some Mondays from 6:30pm-8:30pm.  Tech week begins November 11th and performances will be on November 15th at 7pm, November 16th at 1pm and 7pm and November 17th at 1pm.  This show has very difficult music and choreography.  Rehearsal attendance is imperative! You will only be allowed TWO ABSENCES.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Performers and their parent/guardian will be required to sign and submit this Code of Conduct upon accepting their participation in Matilda.
